How does it work?

Shomrei Shmitta has purchased plots of arable land and is making them available at an affordable rate. Members get a signed contract that is registered as an official deed. The land belongs to the buyer for the entire Shmitta year of 5782, and is left fallow throughout that time in keeping with the hallowed mitzvah.

At the insistence of our rabbanim, all lands sold are private since it is doubtful whether one can fulfill Shemitta by leasing land from a farmer who doesn’t have full ownership of it.

Which Rav okays this arrangement?

The organization is under the guidance of its Rabbonim, Rav Asher Freiman and Rav Akiva Wozner of the EidaHachareidis, and Rav Avraham David Levy of the Hayashar V’hatov Beis Din.

The language of the contracts and how the kinyan operates were devised by gedolei hador, including Rav Yitzhak Tuvia Weiss, the Gaavad of the Eidah Hacharedis; Rav Moshe Sternbuch, the Raavad of the Eida Hachareidis; and Rav Chaim Kanievsky;.

Is this a new concept?

Actually not. Many Gedolim of the previous generations who lived outside Eretz Yisroel have eagerly sought the opportunity to keep Shmitta. When Rav Eliyahu Mani moved from Baghdad to Chevron, for example, his brother-in-law, the Ben Ish Chai gave him money to buy a field for him and hire a farmer to work in it for six years so that he can observe Shmitta.

In modern times, the great RavAharon of Belz had a garden planted in his courtyard in Tel Aviv, the sainted Chazon Ish tended a small patch in his yard, Rav Aharon Roth of Shomrei Emunim bought a small field for the one Shemitta he was in Eretz Yisroel, and the Imrei Chaim of Viznitz bought an esrog orchard and sold it right after Shemitta.

Whose idea was this?

Rav Tzvi Yaakov Goldman initiated the idea of making this concept available to every Yid for this upcoming Shmitta. It has never been easier for Yidden to take part in this great mitzvah and earn Hashem’s promise or “V’tzivisi es birchosi!”
